The High School Placement Test

HSPT

For over fifty years, academic high schools nationwide have used the Scholastic Testing Service's High School Placement Test (HSPT®) to assist with admissions, scholarship selection, and curriculum placement.

The HSPT is a comprehensive placement test for eighth graders for placement in the ninth grade.

The HSPT maintains a site as a resource for parents and students seeking information about the test. The FAQs link provides detailed responses to the most commonly asked questions. Comments and specific questions about the test itself and the testing process can be asked on the HSPT blog site.  Please visit the HSPT Parent's Page for more information.

How Much Does the HSPT Affect Admission?

One of our primary criteria for admission is the student's ability to handle college-prep-level work.  We rely primarily on course grades from grades 6 – 8 to evaluate that ability.  If a student's grades are questionable, we look to the HSPT for more insight.  The bottom line is that we prioritize grades over HSPT scores, and the HSPT nearly always serves to the student's advantage.

Taking the HSPT at Your Catholic Elementary School

For the second year, the four Tucson-area Catholic high schools are joining together to offer the High School Placement Test (HSPT) to every eighth-grade student in a Tucson-area Catholic school.

Each school will administer the test in class during the week of November 13.  You do not need to register or pay a fee to take the test.  Please see the list below (Catholic Elementary School HSPT Date) or contact your school for the date and time at your campus.

Students who missed the test date on their campus may take the High School Placement Test at St. Augustine.  We will register the student for the high-school placement test based on the test date you mark on your application.  Please see the list below (HSPT Dates at St. Augustine) for scheduled dates.

Taking the HSPT at St. Augustine

Students who do not attend Catholic schools or who missed the test date on their campus may take the High School Placement Test at St. Augustine.  We will register the student for the high-school placement test based on the test date you mark on your application.  Please see the list below (HSPT Dates at St. Augustine) for scheduled dates.

If you are unable to attend a scheduled test date or have other questions about the testing, please contact us at admissions@staugustinehigh.com or (520) 751-8300.

Taking the HSPT at Another Tucson Catholic High School

Please notify the Admissions Department if you took a high-school placement test at another high school.  We will contact the school to ask for your test results.  If we receive the results from the other school, you will not have to take the St. Augustine placement test.

If You Live Outside Tucson or the United States

We do not require the HSPT for international students or students living outside Tucson at the time of application.  However, if you can arrange to take the HSPT where you live, we strongly encourage you to do so.  The test results are likely to enhance your application.

Test Accommodations

If your student requires accommodations for standardized testing, you have several options.

At Your Catholic Elementary School

Please contact your school to inquire about the possibility of taking the HSPT on campus with accommodations. Providing the accommodations can be difficult and each school makes its own determination.

At St. Augustine

St. Augustine will provide accommodations at each of its test dates for students who apply to the school before the test date. Please contact the Admissions Department to request accommodations for your test date.

At Another Tucson Catholic High School

Some of the Catholic high schools offer specific dates for students needing accommodations. If you take the test at one of those schools, inform the St. Augustine Admissions Department so we can request your test results.
