Academic Planning Sessions

The first day of high school is Wednesday, August 1.  It’s time for the next step to get ready for that day:  Academic Planning Sessions.

First, let us set your mind at ease.  We admitted you to St. Augustine and this session will not change that.  The sessions serve two purposes: for all of us to get to know each other and to begin building your schedule.

Date and Time

We will hold four “drop-in” interview sessions in the school cafeteria.  It is mandatory that you attend ONE of these sessions.

  • Tuesday, April 10                   3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 18             3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Monday, April 23                   3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 3                   3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

You do not need to RSVP, sign up, or register.  Just drop in with one or both of your parents between the times shown.  Your interview will take 15 to 20 minutes.

Preparation

You have your first high-school homework assignment.

  • Pick your world language.

You may choose French or Spanish.

  • Pick and rank your five preferred electives.

You take one elective in your freshman year.  Choose the five that interest you the most and number them according to your preference.  We will do our best to schedule you in one of your top choices.

  • Review our course recommendations for you.

Your placement in core courses has been pre-selected based on your grades and your scores on the High School Placement Test (HSPT).  You will have a chance to discuss any questions or requests for modification to this at your interview.

To help you with these tasks, you will receive a personalized Course Recommendations sheet.  You may want to consult the course catalog for more information, which you will find on our Web site (here).  We also listed the link on your Course Recommendations sheet.

At the Interview

Check-in

Please check in when you arrive.  Our parent volunteers will prepare your paperwork, and a Student Ambassador will escort you to the waiting area.

The Interview

There are three parts to the interview, which should take around 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Welcome and Get Acquainted

The faculty member will ask a few questions.  Don’t worry!  There are no right answers.  Feel free to ask a few questions of your own.

  • Electives and World Language

You will pick and rank your preferred electives and your world language.

  • Course Recommendations

The faculty member will review the course recommendations with you and answer basic questions. 

Additional Stations

Following your interview and depending on your needs, your choices, and your requests, you may meet with one or more faculty for the following area.

Change Requests: English, Math, and Science

If you want to discuss changing a course placement, you will meet with a faculty member from each of the relevant departments to assist you.

Spanish Evaluation

If you selected Spanish and you speak Spanish at home most days, the student will meet alone with a Spanish teacher to evaluate the best placement: Spanish 1, Spanish for Heritage Speakers 1, etc.

Art Evaluation

If you would like to take an art class more advanced than Introduction to Art, bring your portfolio or samples of your work.  The student will meet with the art teacher to evaluate your requested placement in advanced art.

Music Audition/Evaluation

If you would like to take Intermediate Piano or Guitar, you must audition with the music teacher to qualify for this advanced placement.

Also, please bring your instrument if you are interested in joining the St. Augustine Ensemble (a group of student musicians that plays at various events) or in taking the Choir or Mariachi courses.  The student will meet with the music teacher to evaluate skill level in preparation for taking the course (or joining the Ensemble) next year.

Resource Teacher

If you need academic support services, you will meet briefly with our Resource Teacher to discuss your support.

Administration Review

One of your last stops is with a St. Augustine administrator.  This person will review your checklist to make sure everything is complete, approve any change requests, and answer other questions you may have.

Check-out

Your last stop will collect all your paperwork, provide any additional documents to take home, and check you out for the day.
